田代島猫神社 (Tashirojima Cat Shrine)
The Neko Jinja in Tashirojima, Ishinomaki is a shrine dedicated to cats in the middle of the island. Fixed net-fishing was popular on the island after the Edo period and fishermen would stay overnight to watch their catch. The stray cats in the island would then approach them and beg for scraps and this built a relationship between the humans and the pets. One day, a stray rock fell on one cat and killed it. Feeling sorry for it, the fishermen buried it and enshrined it.
